Letter of Farewell from David Park
June 2023
Dear Siblings and Friends in Christ,
May this letter find you in the peace of the risen Lord!
It looks like this will be my last pastoral letter to you. I am writing this with a grateful heart. Honestly, I think there are only a few who received, like I did, a blast of a going-away party in our Annual Conference. I must be a very lucky and “good boy.”
The past 10 years was the best of my ministry years. I feel blessed that I was allowed to retire from St. Andrew’s, the best appointment in my ministerial career (which I say unabashedly). It was a decade that helped me see who I am as a pastor, as a husband, as a father, and as a human being. And I think I became better—a little, at least.
I am grateful to the members who tolerated my shortcomings, and supported my half-baked ideas. Thank God, you baked the rest of the way, and made things happen. As I depart, I beg your forgiveness for all my sins, mistakes, and mess-ups.
You caught me by a surprise with all the extravagant programs, gifts, good will, and blessings. Who gets the going-away party like I did? A musical theater! With goodies galore! And the decoration that will make an outdoorsman out of a shy cat! Thank you to all who made this wonderful occasion of send-off a memorable day (I’m thinking, why not do this kind of production once a month?)! I wish I took a video recording, instead of pictures!
I have a high hope for everyone for the next decade of life in St. Andrew’s. There were a few things I wished to see happen but didn’t; and with the arrival of the new pastor, I pray that St. Andrew’s will bring all the possibilities into reality.
As the pastoral ethics demands that I stay away from St. Andrew’s for a full year, so that the new pastor would not have to suffer the lingering predecessor: I will not be able to be in contact with you. Any and all pastoral duty will be handled by the new pastor. That way, you can fully appreciate the new Pastor’s love and care, and gifts and graces. That is the proper way.
I will keep your love and blessings in my heart, and I shall surely enjoy my retirement, to honor your wishes!
Sincerely your servant and friend,
David Park.
